Topology invisible to eigenvalues in obstructed atomic insulators

Jennifer Cano et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the role of symmetry eigenvalues in revealing the topological character of bands. The authors compare different atomic limit phases that have the same irreducible representations, but can be distinguished by quantized Berry phases. They provide examples where such phases are not topological, yet have a topological obstruction between them. The study computes exhaustive lists of irrep-equivalent band representations in all space groups and derives necessary conditions for irrep equivalence using group theory. The authors conjecture and prove, in some cases, that non-equivalent irrep-equivalent band representations can be distinguished by a topological invariant.

Evidence for a higher-order topological insulator in a three-dimensional material built from van der Waals stacking of bismuth-halide chains

Ryo Noguchi et al.

Summary: Research on topological quantum materials with van der Waals structures is gaining attention, showing that a slight modification of stacking can induce a transition from trivial insulator to higher-order topological insulator. This opens doors for engineering topologically non-trivial edge states for future spintronics applications.

A charge-density-wave topological semimetal

Wujun Shi et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that (TaSe4)(2)I is a Weyl semimetal with 24 pairs of Weyl nodes at room temperature, and also exhibits an established charge-density wave instability. The charge-density wave in (TaSe4)(2)I couples the bulk Weyl points and opens a bandgap, providing a pathway for exploring the interplay of correlations and topology in a solid-state material.

Band Representations and Topological Quantum Chemistry

Jennifer Cano et al.

Summary: This article provides a pedagogical review of the theory of topological quantum chemistry and topological crystalline insulators, focusing on the properties of crystal symmetry groups and band representations. By quantifying the symmetry of band structures and imposing symmetry constraints on band connectivity in momentum space, new topological phases can be discovered and classified. The article concludes with an outlook toward future developments in this field.

Summary: The authors extended Topological Quantum Chemistry to magnetic space groups, forming a complete theory of band topology in magnetic and nonmagnetic crystalline solids. Irvsp: To obtain irreducible representations of electronic states in the VASP

Jiacheng Gao et al.

Summary: The open-source program irvsp computes irreducible representations for electronic states in all 230 space groups, using wavefunctions and space group operators generated by the Vienna ab-initio Simulation Package. It can handle spin-orbit coupling and is useful for analyzing energy bands, their connectivities, and band topology. The program has been extended to orthogonal tight-binding Hamiltonians and a sister program is also available.

Critical Behavior and Universal Signature of an Axion Insulator State

Hailong Li et al.

Summary: The search for an axion insulator state in the ferromagnetic-3D topological insulator (TI) heterostructure and MnBi2Te4 has attracted intense interest recently. A systematic investigation of the disorder-induced phase transition of the axion insulator state in a 3D TI with antiparallel magnetization alignment surfaces reveals a 2D disorder-induced phase transition on the surfaces of the 3D TI. A phenomenological theory maps the random mass Dirac Hamiltonian of the axion insulator state into the Chalker-Coddington network model, providing a way to probe the axion insulator state by investigating the universal signature of such a phase transition.

Delocalization Transition of a Disordered Axion Insulator

Zhi-Da Song et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the stability of the topology of the axion insulator under quenched disorder respecting inversion symmetry, and the emergence of an intermediate metallic phase during the transition to a trivial insulator. The critical exponent of the localization length near the delocalization transition is found to be nu = 1.42 +/- 0.12, and the delocalization transition is shown to be stable even with weak breaking of the average inversion symmetry.

Simulating higher-order topological insulators in density wave insulators

Kuan-Sen Lin et al.

Summary: The paper introduces a general procedure to compute gauge fields in higher dimensions associated with low-dimensional systems with periodic density wave modulations and constructs 2D models that can be promoted to higher-order topological phases with U(1) and SU(2) gauge fields in 3D. Additionally, the study shows that adiabatic sliding of the phase of the modulation can induce corner modes in 2D models, resulting in hinge modes in promoted models. The research also examines the equivalence between a 3D Weyl semimetal gapped by charge-density wave order and a 4D nodal line system gapped by a U(1) gauge field with a nonzero second Chern number.

Type-III Weyl semimetals: (TaSe4)2I

Xiao-Ping Li et al.

Summary: In this study, a new type III Weyl semimetal is proposed, exemplified by (TaSe4) (2) I with larger chiral charges and gapless characteristics at room temperature. External strain can induce transitions among different types of Weyl semimetals in (TaSe4) (2) I, accompanied by Lifshitz transitions of the Fermi surfaces. The work experimentally identifies (TaSe4) (2) I as a type III Weyl semimetal and provides a platform for further investigation into the physics of type III Weyl fermions.
