Electrochemical reduction selectivity of crotonaldehyde on copper

Zachary J. Barton et al.

Summary: Electrochemical reduction technology successfully converts crotonaldehyde into butanal, butanol, butene, and butane under ambient conditions using a copper mesh working electrode. While butanal is typically the most abundant product from crotonaldehyde reduction, most of the butene and butane appear to result from initial reduction of the aldehyde group.

Selective CO2 Electrochemical Reduction Enabled by a Tricomponent Copolymer Modifier on a Copper Surface

Jianchun Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, a highly modular tricomponent copolymer modified Cu electrode achieved high selectivity for ethylene and C2+ products. Control experiments showed the essential role of all three components in enhancing selectivity. Additionally, the copolymer was found to be conveniently prepared and improved film robustness.

Dynamic Boundary Layer Simulation of Pulsed CO2 Electrolysis on a Copper Catalyst

Justin C. Bui et al.

Summary: The study found that pulsed electrolysis induces dynamic changes in pH and CO2 concentration near the Cu surface, leading to an enhanced faradaic efficiency of C2+ products. By exploring various pulse shapes, operating conditions that maximize the rate of C2+ product formation while minimizing the rates of other products formation can be established.

Electrochemical reduction of acetonitrile to ethylamine

Rong Xia et al.

Summary: The authors present an electrocatalytic route for producing ethylamine through selective electroreduction of acetonitrile, with Cu nanoparticles exhibiting high Faradaic efficiency and stability. The high ethylamine selectivity on Cu is attributed to the moderate binding affinity for reaction intermediates.

CO2 electrolysis to multicarbon products in strong acid

Jianan Erick Huang et al.

Summary: Carbon dioxide electroreduction (CO2R) is being actively studied as a promising route to convert carbon emissions to valuable chemicals and fuels. A study found that concentrating potassium cations in the vicinity of electrochemically active sites accelerates CO2 activation to enable efficient CO2R in acid. The research achieved a high CO2R efficiency on copper at pH <1 with a single-pass CO2 utilization of 77%.

On the effect of anion exchange ionomer binders in bipolar electrode membrane interface water electrolysis

Britta Mayerhoefer et al.

Summary: Bipolar membrane|electrode interface water electrolyzers (BPEMWE) show superior performance compared to proton exchange membrane (PEM) water electrolyzers, primarily due to reduced contact resistances stemming from adhesive effects between oppositely charged polymers. The study indicates that the local pH at a metal surface is strongly correlated with the pH of the surrounding solution rather than the type of ionomer used.

Orientation of a bipolar membrane determines the dominant ion and carbonic species transport in membrane electrode assemblies for CO2 reduction

Marijn A. Blommaert et al.

Summary: A bipolar membrane can be used in reverse bias and forward bias in an electrochemical cell. The orientation of the BPM affects the environment of the CO2 reduction catalyst and ion transport mechanism. Reverse bias reduces CO2 crossover and cathodic potential, while forward bias shows lower CO selectivity and higher salt concentration.
