Linking void and interphase evolution to electrochemistry in solid-state batteries using operando X-ray tomography

John A. Lewis et al.

Summary: The study using operando synchrotron X-ray computed microtomography reveals the evolution of lithium/solid-state electrolyte interfaces during battery cycling, showing how void formation, interphase growth, and volumetric changes affect cell behavior. Loss of contact at the interface between lithium and the solid-state electrolyte is found to be the primary cause of cell failure, while redox-active interphase and global volume changes upon charge also play significant roles in determining cell performance. These findings provide insights into the impact of chemo-mechanical phenomena on cell behavior, aiding in the development of solid-state batteries.

High Energy Density and Stable Three-Dimensionally Structured Se-Loaded Bicontinuous Porous Carbon Battery Electrodes

Junjie Wang et al.

Summary: 3D-structured Se-loaded bicontinuous porous carbon (BPC) electrodes are fabricated by colloidal templating of BPC followed by pulsed-voltage Se electrodeposition, delivering a specific capacity of 665 mAh g(-1) at 0.1 C rate. The utilization of vinylene carbonate (VC) containing electrolyte results in minimal capacity fade over 500 cycles at 1 C rate, possibly due to the formation of a stable solid electrolyte interface (SEI). Additionally, the rate performance of the 3D Se/BPC electrodes is good, with a deliverable capacity of about 300 mAh g(-1) at rates as high as 5 C.
