In optimized rubrene-based nanoparticle blends for photon upconversion, singlet energy collection outcompetes triplet-pair separation, not singlet fission

David G. Bossanyi et al.

Summary: The conversion of near-infrared photons to visible light through triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion is an attractive strategy for boosting the efficiency of solar cell technology. However, the reverse process of singlet fission in solid state has been found to hinder efficient upconversion. Despite the increase in photoluminescence quantum yield of nanoparticle films from 3% to 61% with DBD doping, the energy transfer from Rubrene to DBP does not outcompete the formation of triplet-pairs through singlet fission.

Interfacial Trap-Assisted Triplet Generation in Lead Halide Perovskite Sensitized Solid-State Upconversion

Lili Wang et al.

Summary: Photon upconversion via triplet-triplet annihilation (TTA) has the potential to exceed the Shockley-Queisser limit of single-junction solar cells by utilizing sub-bandgap photons. This study adjusted the interfacial properties of upconversion devices through surface solvent treatment and found that devices with more interfacial traps exhibited brighter upconversion. The importance of interfacial control was highlighted, providing guidance for the design and optimization of upconversion devices using perovskites or other semiconductors as sensitizers.

Bulk halide perovskites as triplet sensitizers: progress and prospects in photon upconversion

Zachary A. VanOrman et al.

Summary: Triplet-triplet annihilation-based photon upconversion is a promising mechanism for converting lower energy photons into higher energy ones, with potential applications in photovoltaics, infrared sensing, biomedicine, and photochemical reactions. Metal halide perovskite semiconductors have been introduced as triplet sensitizers for this process, but their full potential has yet to be fully realized. Various pathways for device optimization and improvements are discussed, along with the bright future of perovskite materials as triplet sensitizers in solid-state upconversion applications.

Singlet fission from upper excited singlet states and polaron formation in rubrene film

Tong Wu et al.

Summary: Femtosecond fluorescence up-conversion and transient absorption pump-probe setups were used to study the relaxation dynamics of the lower and upper excited singlet electronic states in rubrene films, revealing accelerated singlet fission and polaron formation compared to the S-1 state. This finding could significantly expand the applications of rubrene in organic electronics and provide a new direction for synthesizing novel materials with optimized excited state properties for organic photovoltaic applications.
