The Physics of Interlayer Exciton Delocalization in Ruddlesden-Popper Lead Halide Perovskites

David Giovanni et al.

Summary: Two-dimensional lead halide Ruddlesden-Popper perovskites (RPP) have unique multi quantum-well structures, resulting in novel energy transfer phenomena, suitable for photovoltaic, light-emission applications, and emerging technologies. A finite quantum-well superlattice model is developed to validate the hypothesis of exciton delocalization in RPP, enabling rapid energy transfer between adjacent quantum wells.

Summary: The recent emergence of metal halide perovskites as triplet sensitizers has opened up new possibilities in optoelectronics. Understanding the band-edge energetics of perovskite nanocrystals, characterizing excitons, and investigating sensitization mechanisms of long-lived triplets are crucial in this area. Modulating deactivation processes in sensitized triplets for photon upconversion or room-temperature phosphorescence is also explored.

Interlayer Triplet Energy Transfer in Dion-Jacobson Two-Dimensional Lead Halide Perovskites Containing Naphthalene Diammonium Cations

YunHui L. Lin et al.

Summary: In the study of interlayer energy transfer in mixed-halide Dion-Jacobson 2D perovskites containing divalent naphthalene cations, it was found that the sensitized phosphorescence is dominated by naphthalene triplet excimer emission. However, competition occurs between naphthalene monomer phosphorescence and triplet excimer formation when the inorganic exciton is tuned near resonance with the naphthalene triplet. This interlayer energy-transfer process was further elucidated through ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy, revealing kinetic variations in triplet excimer formation times. Ultimately, controlling interlayer interactions in 2D perovskites through cation design will lead to the discovery of new functions and applications for these materials.

Summary: Triplet-triplet annihilation-based photon upconversion is a promising mechanism for converting lower energy photons into higher energy ones, with potential applications in photovoltaics, infrared sensing, biomedicine, and photochemical reactions. Metal halide perovskite semiconductors have been introduced as triplet sensitizers for this process, but their full potential has yet to be fully realized. Various pathways for device optimization and improvements are discussed, along with the bright future of perovskite materials as triplet sensitizers in solid-state upconversion applications.
