A Statistical Modeling and Optimization for Cr(VI) Adsorption from Aqueous Media via Teff Straw-Based Activated Carbon: Isotherm, Kinetics, and Thermodynamic Studies

Surafel Mustefa Beyan et al.

Summary: The growth of tannery industries has led to the disposal of a large volume of harmful Cr(VI) waste into the environment, posing serious hazards to living organisms. This study focused on using teff straw-based activated carbon to remove Cr(VI) from aqueous solutions. Statistical modeling and optimization were used to determine the optimal conditions for Cr(VI) removal. The pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm models were found suitable for describing the adsorption data. The results showed that the teff straw-based activated carbon has a potential for efficiently removing Cr(VI).

Adsorption Phenomenon for Removal of Pb(II) via Teff Straw based Activated Carbon Prepared by Microwave-Assisted Pyrolysis: Process Modelling, Statistical Optimisation, Isotherm, Kinetics, and Thermodynamic Studies

Surafel Mustefa Beyan et al.

Summary: Eragrostis tef (Teff) is an important staple crop in Ethiopia, and its straw can be used as a source of lignocellulosic biomass. In this study, teff straw was used to synthesize activated carbon for the adsorption of lead II ions from water. The optimal conditions for maximum removal of Pb(II) were determined through experiments and statistical models. The adsorption process was found to follow pseudo second-order kinetics, and the thermodynamic study showed the feasibility and spontaneity of the adsorption. The locally available agricultural waste-derived activated carbon can effectively and cost-efficiently remove toxic Pb(II) ions from contaminated water.

Summary: Starch, a key food ingredient, can be extracted from various sources such as roots, tubers, cereals, and legumes for industrial applications. The overexploitation of conventional starch sources has led to the need for exploring new botanical sources like indigenous Ethiopian tuber crops. These tubers offer unique characteristics for potential use in food and nonfood industries, but further research is required to fully understand their applications compared to common starches.

J. Tarique et al.

Summary: This study investigated the development of arrowroot starch films with glycerol as a plasticizer, showing improvements in physical, mechanical, thermal, and barrier properties of the films. Increasing glycerol concentration resulted in higher film thickness and moisture content, while reducing tensile strength and modulus. The findings provide valuable insights into the potential for biodegradable food packaging.
