Dynamic synchronization of extreme heat in complex climate networks in the contiguous United States

Zhi-Hua Wang et al.

Summary: Research on urban climate has rapidly developed in recent decades, yet there is still a lack of systematic tools for studying urban climate systems. This study proposes a new framework based on complex networks to analyze the topological structure of urban climate in the United States and simulate urban networks to explore the synchronization processes of heat waves. The research findings show that urban climate networks in the US exhibit highly modular spatial hierarchical organization and small-world effects.

Summary: This study quantified the effects of three-dimensional building form on urban land surface temperature using Landsat thermal sensors. Factors such as building density, building height, and building shadow were found to have significant impacts on LST, while sky view factor and frontal area index showed varying effects on LST.

Complex Networks Reveal Heatwave Patterns and Propagations Over the USA

Somnath Mondal et al.

Summary: In this study, we investigated the network structure and propagation characteristics of warm period heatwaves over the Conterminous United States. By applying Event Synchronization metrics and network coefficients, we were able to identify the source and sink regions responsible for heatwave propagations and capture the spatial dependency between heatwave events occurring at different locations. The study revealed the influence of air mass transport and topographic characteristics on the synchronization structure and propagation patterns of heatwaves, providing important insights for heatwave forecasting.

Complex networks of marine heatwaves reveal abrupt transitions in the global ocean

Lisandro Benedetti-Cecchi

Summary: The research found that marine heatwaves have reached a dangerous tipping point, transitioning from highly synchronized preindustrial MHWs to the more extreme but less coherent warming events we experience today. This loose spatiotemporal organization persists under a reduced emission scenario of RCP 2.6, while a second abrupt transition towards a permanent state of highly synchronized MHWs is foreseen by 2075 under a business-as-usual RCP 8.5 scenario.

Perceptions of urban heat island mitigation and implementation strategies: survey and gap analysis

Chenghao Wang et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the perceptions of professional respondents are largely influenced by their geographic areas and there are gaps in public education on UHI mitigation, effective communication between researchers and code writers, implementation of UHI mitigation strategies in some countries, and trustworthy information shared on social media. Bridging these gaps is crucial for fostering public engagement and improving the effectiveness of UHI mitigation measures.

Assessing spatiotemporal characteristics of urban heat islands from the perspective of an urban expansion and green infrastructure

Peng Tian et al.

Summary: This study used Landsat thermal sensor images to retrieve urban land surface temperature and revealed spatiotemporal characteristics of surface urban heat island effect from the perspective of urban expansion and urban green infrastructure. The results indicate that the Hangzhou city SUHI effect was prominent. The relationship between SUHI effect, urban expansion, and urban green infrastructure varied in different time periods.

Compound environmental impact of urban mitigation strategies: Co-benefits, trade-offs, and unintended consequence

Zhi-Hua Wang

Summary: Urban areas face various environmental issues, with mitigation strategies broadly classified as white, green, or blue infrastructure impacting complex interactions between landscape dynamics, human activities, and atmospheric transport. This study critically reviewed the compound environmental impact of urban mitigation strategies, evaluating not only the targeted cooling effect but also the co-benefits, trade-offs, or unintended consequences in terms of building energy saving and impact to human health. A novel mathematical framework was proposed to assess the compound environmental impact in a unified way, emphasizing the need for future transdisciplinary collaboration among urban engineers, atmosphere and climate scientists, and epidemiologists.

Cool pavements for urban heat island mitigation: A synthetic review

Chenghao Wang et al.

Summary: The urban heat island effect presents challenges to urban environmental quality, building energy consumption, and public health. Research, policy-making, and industry efforts are being made to develop UHI mitigation strategies, but lack of synergies between different stakeholders may hinder effectiveness. Cool pavement technologies have potential to mitigate UHI, but gaps exist in research and implementation, requiring further collaboration and action for sustainable urban energy use.
