The effect of surface preparation on the protective properties of Al2O3 and HfO2 thin films deposited on cp-titanium by atomic layer deposition

Ivan Spajic et al.

Summary: ALD was used to prepare thin films of alumina and hafnia on cp-Ti surfaces for biomedical applications, with smoother surfaces showing better anti-corrosive properties. Hafnia films exhibited lower porosity and slightly better protective properties compared to alumina, confirming the potential of both materials for reducing failure risks in medical implants.

Improving surface features of PEO coatings on titanium and titanium alloys with zirconia particles: A review

Maryam Molaei et al.

Summary: Plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) is a low-cost, high-efficiency method used for in-situ ceramic coatings preparation on metal surfaces, with the ability to provide coatings with various compositions and properties by adjusting electrical parameters and solution composition. The addition of zirconia particles enhances the function of PEO coatings, improving properties such as corrosion resistance, wear resistance, hardness, and biocompatibility. Studies have shown that adding zirconia particles to the solution can produce TiO2/ZrO2 composites, improving the mechanical and physical properties, wear and corrosion behavior, biological responses, and oxidation resistance of PEO oxide films on titanium and its alloys.

Influence of sodium aluminate concentration and process duration on microstructure, mechanical and electrochemical behavior of PEO coatings formed on CP-Ti

V Malinovschi et al.

Summary: Mixed titanium-aluminum oxide coatings were successfully grown on grade-2 commercially pure titanium substrates using plasma electrolytic oxidation technique, showing excellent mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. The coatings exhibited significantly improved corrosion performance in 3.5% NaCl compared to uncoated titanium, attributed to microstructural and surface changes resulting from different preparation conditions.
