Australian magpies adjust their alarm calls according to predator distance

Mylene Dutour et al.

Summary: Animals produce antipredator calls in response to predators, with Western Australian magpies varying their calls based on predator distance. Closer predators prompt more calls, demonstrating an ability to encode information and moderate antipredator behaviors efficiently.

Visual contagion in prey defence signals can enhance honest defence

Shihao Dong et al.

Summary: The co-evolutionary arms race between predators and prey has led to complex signaling, with pursuit deterrence signals being an effective way for prey to indicate a predator's further approach is futile at low cost. The Asian honey bee Apis cerana performs a visually contagious I See You (ISY) signal that deters attacking hornets, attracting guard bees and enhancing defensive signaling. This contagious signal is buffered from runaway false signals by likely selection for honesty within the highly cooperative bee colony.

Differences between queen piping temporal structures of two honeybee species, Apis cerana and Apis mellifera

Tetsu Yamamoto et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the piping signals of two honeybee species, Apis cerana and Apis mellifera, had different temporal structures. The tooting of A. cerana consisted of almost one long syllable, while that of A. mellifera was constructed from several syllables. The quacking of both species comprised around 50 short syllables, but the duration and period of the syllables of A. cerana were about half those of A. mellifera.
