Observed Global Increases in Tropical Cyclone-Induced Ocean Cooling and Primary Production

Nguyen Dac Da et al.

Summary: Global tropical cyclone-induced sea surface temperature cooling and surface chlorophyll-a concentration have significantly increased over the past 20-35 years, driven by an increase in the intensity of strong tropical cyclones. The increase in chlorophyll-a concentration, particularly in oligotrophic areas during the tropical cyclone season, has partially offset the overall decline in primary production under climate change.

Observational study of super typhoon Meranti (2016) using satellite, surface drifter, Argo float and reanalysis data

Hui Chen et al.

Summary: This study describes the basic features of super typhoon Meranti in 2016 and its impact on the upper ocean using multiple data sources. The results show a maximum sea surface cooling of 2.0 degrees Celsius after Meranti, and that satellite surface wind failed to capture the core structure of the typhoon. Near-inertial currents were significantly enhanced during the passage of Meranti, according to observations from sea surface drifters.
