Eleven-year solar cycles over the last millennium revealed by radiocarbon in tree rings

Nicolas Brehm et al.

Summary: This study reconstructed a continuous, annually resolved atmospheric C-14 concentration record from tree rings covering almost the entire last millennium. It revealed the presence of the Schwabe cycle over the entire time range and identified some potentially harmful strong solar events. The record also provides a useful benchmark for radiocarbon dating accuracy.

Analyzing the geomagnetic axial dipole field moment over the historical period from new archeointensity results at Bukhara (Uzbekistan, Central Asia)

Marie Troyano et al.

Summary: Direct measurements of Earth's magnetic field intensity and direction have been available since the mid-19th century, allowing accurate determination of its variations. This study focuses on archeomagnetic intensity data from baked clay bricks in Central Asia to analyze the axial dipole behavior during the late 18th century, showing a relative minimum in dipole magnitude. The reliability of the gufm1 model is crucial for interpretation, as the axial dipole evolution appears non-linear.

Evaluation of candidate models for the 13th generation International Geomagnetic Reference Field

P. Alken et al.

Summary: The 13th revision of the International Geomagnetic Reference Field (IGRF) was released in December 2019, comprising two new main field models and a model of predicted secular variation. These models were produced from candidates submitted by fifteen international teams. The evaluation process, final product derivation approach, and retrospective analysis of the IGRF-12 SV candidates are documented in this study, suggesting potential benefits of combining core modeling with satellite observations for forecasting secular variation.
