Ocean Turbulence and Mixing Near the Shelf Break South-East of Nova Scotia

Iossif Lozovatsky et al.

Summary: Coastal fog formation near the southern tip of Nova Scotia was observed due to the advection of warm, humid air towards the shore over colder water. Shear instability in the pycnocline was frequently observed on the Nova Scotia shelf, shelf break, and continental slope, with high probability values of the gradient Richardson number in certain depth ranges. Additionally, the eddy diffusivity estimates showed a strong dependence on Richardson number, indicating a higher level of mixing at certain conditions.

A Review of Coastal Fog Microphysics During C-FOG

I. Gultepe et al.

Summary: The C-FOG project aims to improve coastal fog prediction through microphysical measurements and parametrization evaluation in Eastern Canada. The study finds a correlation between microphysical observations and three-dimensional wind factors in fog intensity evaluation, highlighting the need for adjustments in microphysical observations and parametrizations to enhance the predictability of numerical weather prediction models.

Simulations of Coastal Fog in the Canadian Atlantic with the Weather Research and Forecasting Model

Reneta Dimitrova et al.

Summary: The effectiveness of microphysics and planetary-boundary-layer parametrizations in the WRF model for simulating coastal fog was evaluated using data from the C-FOG research program. It was found that the model's performance depends strongly on simulated local meteorology and microphysical parametrizations. Various factors, including visibility algorithms and PBL parametrizations, were also evaluated. High space-time resolution simulations based on specific microphysical parametrization showed better comparison with data, although still overestimated. The study identified potential improvements for fog estimates and highlighted the WRF model's differential performance over ocean vs. land.
