Reconciling carbon-cycle processes from ecosystem to global scales

Ashley P. Ballantyne et al.

Summary: Understanding carbon dynamics from ecosystem to global scales is still a challenge, as estimates of C-cycle processes do not necessarily agree across different scales. By combining satellite and atmospheric data in innovative ways, potential pathways of carbon loss can be identified to reconcile spatial mismatches. Independent datasets compiled from terrestrial and aquatic environments can now be combined to advance C-cycle science across the land-water interface.

Summary: Improving our ability to detect changes in terrestrial and aquatic systems is crucial in environmental sciences, and long-term field research infrastructures like KCS play a fundamental role in revealing these changes. With a range of equipment and data generation supporting disciplinary studies, KCS attracts diverse scientists and contributes to a better understanding of boreal landscape functioning.

Regional CO2 inversions with LUMIA, the Lund University Modular Inversion Algorithm, v1.0

Guillaume Monteil et al.

Summary: Atmospheric inversions are used to estimate net sources and sinks of CO2, with the quality and density of observations, transport model accuracy, and statistical approach adaptation playing key roles in the accuracy of flux estimation. Increased demand for higher spatial resolution inversions has driven the development of new models to provide efficient feedback and improve computational efficiency.

The consolidated European synthesis of CO2 emissions and removals for the European Union and United Kingdom: 1990-2018

Ana Maria Roxana Petrescu et al.

Summary: Reliable quantification of atmospheric CO2 sources and sinks is crucial for monitoring emissions progress under international agreements. This study integrates various data sources and models to estimate CO2 fluxes for the EU and UK, highlighting uncertainties and the challenges in comparing different approaches. The study concludes that current independent methods align with national inventories but have large uncertainties due to model differences and varying definitions of CO2 fluxes.
