Transfer of heavy metals in fruits and vegetables grown in greenhouse cultivation systems and their health risks in Northwest China

Zhikun Chen et al.

Summary: This study analyzed and evaluated the concentration of heavy metals in soil and food crops in greenhouse cultivation systems in two study areas, revealing differences in heavy metal accumulation between the regions and highlighting arsenic contamination as a serious concern. The health risks associated with heavy metal content in fruits and vegetables grown in northwest China's greenhouse cultivation systems should be addressed to reduce heavy metal accumulation.

Ectopic overexpression of a membrane-tethered transcription factor gene NAC60 from oilseed rape positively modulates programmed cell death and age-triggered leaf senescence

Jingli Yan et al.

Summary: The research reveals that BnaNAC60 is a membrane-tethered NAC transcription factor associated with the endoplasmic reticulum membrane, whose expression is induced during leaf senescence. Translocation of BnaNAC60 to the nucleus is triggered by ER and oxidative stress treatments, leading to modulation of cell death, ROS accumulation, and leaf senescence. Additionally, BnaNAC60 can activate the promoter activities of various downstream target genes, suggesting its role in regulating plant stress responses and developmental processes.

Molecular Mechanism of Nramp-Family Transition Metal Transport

Aaron T. Bozzi et al.

Summary: The Nramp family of transport proteins facilitates the uptake of essential micronutrients by organisms through a process that deviates from the canonical model of symport, utilizing the LeuT fold structure for selective transition-metal transport.

An alternative splicing variant of PtRD26 delays leaf senescence by regulating multiple NAC transcription factors in Populus

Hou-Ling Wang et al.

Summary: Through RNA sequencing in poplar, researchers identified key transcription factors involved in autumn leaf senescence and discovered that a truncated protein can act as a dominant-negative regulator by interacting with core senescence-associated transcription factors. They proposed that age-dependent alternative splicing variants play a role in fine-tuning the molecular mechanisms that regulate leaf senescence in trees.

Transient reprogramming of crop plants for agronomic performance

Stefano Torti et al.

Summary: The proposed technology targets regulatory circuits within plants transiently, allowing for customized alterations of agronomic traits. By utilizing RNA viral transfection methods, this approach is fast, versatile, and does not involve genetic modification of plant genomes. It can be used in multiple plant species for rapid fine-tuning of traits without altering the genome.
