Frequency of menstrual abnormalities and their associated neuroimaging findings in women with focal refractory epilepsy

Mahta Ranjbar et al.

Summary: This study investigated women with refractory epilepsy and found that around one-third of them had menstrual abnormalities, with oligomenorrhea-hypomenorrhea being the most common type. The most prevalent brain MRI pathology in women with refractory focal epilepsy was mesial temporal sclerosis. Future studies are needed to explore the connection between reproductive dysfunctions and temporal lobe malfunctions.

Polycystic ovarian syndrome in Nigerian women with epilepsy on carbamazepine/levetiracetam monotherapy

Luqman Ogunjimi et al.

Summary: The study compared the effects of older drugs like carbamazepine (CBZ) and newer agent like levetiracetam (LEV) on polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) in women with epilepsy (WWE). The frequency of PCOS and its subcomponent were higher among WWE compared to controls, with a higher incidence in the LEV group compared to the CBZ group. However, the levels of sex steroid hormones were comparable between the two groups of WWE, except for some differences in specific hormones.

The correlation between carbamazepine and valproic acid monotherapy with serum adiponectin and carnitine

Fatma Simsek et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of valproic acid and carbamazepine monotherapy on serum adiponectin and carnitine levels in epilepsy patients. The results showed that both groups of patients had lower levels of serum carnitine and adiponectin compared to the control group, indicating a need for further studies with larger sample sizes to fully understand the impact of antiepileptic drugs on these levels.

Prolactin levels as a criterion to differentiate between psychogenic non-epileptic seizures and epileptic seizures: A systematic review

Yan-Qiu Wang et al.

Summary: The study suggests that prolactin levels can be useful in differentiating between psychogenic non-epileptic seizures and epileptic seizures, especially generalized tonic clonic seizures. However, prolactin levels are not as effective in distinguishing focal impaired awareness seizures or focal aware seizures from PNES, and a negative prolactin measurement is not predictive of PNES.

The Multifaceted Role of Epoxide Hydrolases in Human Health and Disease

Jeremie Gautheron et al.

Summary: Epoxide hydrolases (EHs) are key enzymes involved in the detoxification of xenobiotics and biotransformation of endogenous epoxides, orchestrating crucial signaling pathways for cell homeostasis. The EH family comprises 5 proteins and 2 candidate members, with the best-known EHs being EPHX1 and EPHX2, which have wide expression patterns and multiple functions, leading to the development of specific inhibitors. Studies on pathogenicity of variants in EH genes are ongoing, highlighting the pleiotropic role of EHs in various disorders.

Valproic acid use in fertile women with genetic generalized epilepsies

David Steinbart et al.

Summary: Despite warnings regarding the teratogenicity and risk for impaired cognitive development with VPA, nearly one-fourth of women of fertile age with GGE received this compound from 2015 to 2020. However, lower doses of VPA in these women appear to be sufficient for favorable seizure freedom rates.

The Importance of Leptin to Reproduction

Gwen Childs et al.

Summary: Leptin plays a crucial role in reproduction, with both excess and deficiency impacting fertility. The timing of leptin signaling is crucial for prepubertal development, as inhibition of leptin affects neuron activity. Under balanced nutrition, leptin secretion is regulated within a narrow level range to optimize its trophic effects.
