The Initial Stage of Neurosurgery in China: Contributions from Peking Union Medical College Hospital

Xiaopeng Guo et al.

Summary: The history of neurosurgery in China, especially its initial stage, needs to be reassessed due to emerging evidence from medical records, hospital reports, and journal archives. Despite experiencing slow development during the wars from 1941-1949, the prewar period from 1921-1940 saw significant improvements in operative skills, education, training, and research at PUMCH, laying the foundation for Chinese neurosurgery to flourish in the past 7 decades. Leading Chinese neurosurgeons like Song-Tao Guan and Yi-Cheng Zhao played key roles in the early growth of neurosurgery in China.
