Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and Vertebral Fracture Risk

Fjorda Koromani et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown that vertebral fracture risk is increased in individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus, and is associated with higher risk of non-vertebral fractures and mortality. An increased amount of bone marrow fat may contribute to bone fragility in T2DM. Both teriparatide and denosumab have been found effective in reducing vertebral fracture risk in individuals with T2DM.
