Orbital Observations of a Marker Horizon at Gale Crater

Summary: A distinct marker horizon, exhibiting high calcium pyroxene and other basaltic minerals in contrast to hydrated sulfate signatures, is observed in various parts of Mount Sharp. The marker horizon is marked by ridges, fractures, faults, layering, oval depressions, small craters, and possible yardangs. It is interpreted to have formed concurrently with the sulfate-bearing strata on Mount Sharp, with the most plausible formation mechanisms being a more indurated sulfate unit deposition or volcanic ash deposit during the sulfate formation period.
