Comparison of Class 2 Integron Integrase Activities

Xiaotong Wang et al.

Summary: Integrons play important roles in transmitting antimicrobial resistant genes among bacteria. Class 2 integrons usually have a truncated integrase, IntI2*, due to an internal stop codon. A study found a few class 2 integrons with natural full-length integrases, which were able to catalyze gene cassette integration and excision in Escherichia coli. Different natural full-length IntI2s showed varying integration and excision efficiency, with IntI2(A176) demonstrating the highest activity. The polymorphisms within these IntI2s had limited influence on their catalytic activities.
