Isotope exchange between mercuric [Hg(II)] chloride and Hg(II) bound to minerals and thiolate ligands: Implications for enriched isotope tracer studies

Lijie Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the isotope exchange between newly spiked and pre-existing Hg(II) in environmental matrices, as well as its impact on Hg(II) transformation and bioaccumulation. The results suggest that isotope exchange may lead to biased rate calculations of Hg(II) transformation and bioaccumulation when enriched Hg isotopes are applied in environmental matrices.

Mercury Export From Freshwater to Estuary: Carbocentric Science Elucidates the Fate of a Toxic Compound in Aquatic Boreal Environments

Maud Demarty et al.

Summary: This review focuses on the importance of mercury chemistry in freshwater systems, particularly the high toxicity of the organic form methylmercury. The fate of different forms of mercury along the river-estuary continuum, as well as the challenges in integrating various parameters and technical difficulties in sampling and analyzing mercury, hinder advances in the field. Meanwhile, the significant growth of carbocentric science in the past 25 years has shed light on the common fate of carbon and mercury in freshwater environments.

Chemical speciation of mercury, sulfur and iron in a dystrophic boreal lake sediment, as controlled by the formation of mackinawite and framboidal pyrite

Ulf Skyllberg et al.

Summary: The chemical speciation of mercury, methyl mercury, sulfur and iron in Lake Angessjon in northern Sweden was investigated. The presence or absence of FeSm may be a key factor behind the variability in rates of Hg and MeHg transformation processes in different environmental settings.

Developing understanding of the fate and behaviour of silver in fresh waters and waste waters

D. Scott Smith et al.

Summary: The study compared WHAM predictions with measured ionic silver in diverse DOM, capturing the variability within model uncertainty. WHAM significantly underestimated silver binding in sewage samples, proposing a revised empirical model to account for sewage-specific binding sites. It is suggested that as sewage organic matter degrades, WHAM may better model the form.

Methylmercury formation in boreal wetlands in relation to chemical speciation of mercury(II) and concentration of low molecular mass thiols

Van Liem-Nguyen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between Hg-II speciation and MeHg formation in boreal wetlands, using isotopic tracers and thermodynamic speciation models. The results showed a decisive role of Hg-II concentration in porewater for Hg-II methylation, and a significant positive correlation between methylation potential and low molecular mass thiol compounds of biological origin.

In Situ Voltammetric Sensor of Potentially Bioavailable Inorganic Mercury in Marine Aquatic Systems Based on Gel-Integrated Nanostructured Gold-Based Microelectrode Arrays

Mary-Lou Tercier-Waeber et al.

Summary: The development and validation of nanostructured gold-plated gel-integrated microelectrode arrays for in situ quantification of inorganic mercury species in coastal areas was presented. The sensors showed high sensitivity and low detection limits, making them suitable for real-time monitoring of Hg(II) levels in marine environments. Field evaluation in Arcachon Bay, France successfully demonstrated the effectiveness of these sensors in measuring Hg(II) without chemical modification of the sample.

Mercury mobility, colloid formation and methylation in a polluted Fluvisol as affected by manure application and flooding-draining cycle

Lorenz Gfeller et al.

Summary: This study found that adding cow manure to highly mercury-polluted soils can accelerate the release of mercury, promote its binding with organic and inorganic colloids, and facilitate the sequestration and degradation of mercury.
