A critical review of corrosion characteristics of additively manufactured stainless steels

Majid Laleh et al.

Summary: Additive manufacturing (AM) involves rapid heating and cooling cycles, leading to complex thermal histories and unique microstructural features in AM stainless steels, which result in changes in corrosion behavior. This paper critically reviews the corrosion characteristics of AM stainless steels, focusing on new corrosion phenomena and various forms of localized corrosion, and discusses mechanisms, influencing factors, and recommendations for future development in different corrosive conditions.

The effect of annealing on the selective laser melting of 2205 duplex stainless steel: Microstructure, grain orientation, and manufacturing challenges

Greg N. Nigon et al.

Summary: 2205 duplex stainless steel components were manufactured using gas atomized powder via selective laser melting, with annealing restoring the duplex microstructure. The as-built and annealed ferrite grains exhibited [001] texture, while the measured microhardness was comparable to wrought alloys but the ultimate tensile strength and elongation were inferior. Cr segregation was observed in the as-built components, while Si/Mn segregation was observed in the annealed components.

Grain boundary character distribution in an additively manufactured austenitic stainless steel

Majid Laleh et al.

Summary: The study revealed that an austenitic stainless steel produced by additive manufacturing has relatively fine grains and a high population of Sigma 3 boundaries. The microstructure is mostly dominated by highly incoherent Sigma 3 boundaries, with other types of boundaries present in the grain boundary network. These findings demonstrate the potential to engineer the grain boundary network of materials via additive manufacturing.
