Atomic-scale observation of non-classical nucleation-mediated phase transformation in a titanium alloy

Xiaoqian Fu et al.

Summary: This study reveals a complete kinetic pathway of a non-classical nucleation-induced phase transformation in a technologically important titanium alloy, providing experimental evidence at sub-angstrom resolution. The presence of a metastable phase bridging two main phases is confirmed, with unique structural features and transformation mechanism identified. This non-classical phase evolution mechanism is expected to be more common than previously believed for solid-state transformations.

Coupling effect of stretch-bending deformation and electric pulse treatment on phase transformation behavior and superelasticity of a Ti-50.8 at.% Ni alloy

Shan Liu et al.

Summary: By combining repeated stretch-bending deformation, electric pulse, and age-hardening, the functional stability of Ti-50.8 at.% Ni alloy was improved through refining grain size, introducing dislocations, and multi-stage martensitic transformation behavior. The homogeneous distribution of nanoscaled Ni4Ti3 precipitates also contributed to the excellent functional stability achieved.

Mechanisms of tensile strengthening and oxygen solid solution in single β-phase Ti-35 at.%Ta+O alloys

Katsuya Yokota et al.

Summary: The tensile strength of single beta phase titanium alloy Ti-35 at.% Ta was improved using oxygen solid solution, leading to an increase in 0.2% yield strength. This increase in strength was mainly attributed to the effect of oxygen solid solution, as confirmed by theoretical trends in the experimental results.

Effects of impurity elements on SiC grain boundary stability and corrosion

Jun Hui et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of metallic and nonmetallic impurities on the grain boundary stability of silicon carbide, showing that electronic interactions significantly influence the bonding effects of SiC, leading to corrosion and embrittlement of the grain boundaries. Co-segregation of Bi, Pb, and O was also studied in detail.

The effects of Fe content on the microstructural evolution and tensile properties in Ti-6Al-4V-(2,4)Fe alloys fabricated by thermomechanical powder consolidation

Lei Meng et al.

Summary: Two Ti-6Al-4V-(2, 4)Fe (wt.%) alloys were fabricated by thermomechanical powder consolidation. The microstructure and properties of the alloys are significantly influenced by the Fe content, with a good combination of strength and ductility achieved at around 2%Fe and potentially leading to intergranular fracture at 4%Fe due to strain localization.
