Simultaneous enhancement in strength and ductility of Fe50Mn30Co10Cr10 high-entropy alloy via nitrogen alloying

Yu Han et al.

Summary: Nitrogen was found to transform the TRIP alloy into a TWIP alloy, leading to improved strength and elongation. The nitrogen-doped HEA exhibited high yield strength due to the interstitial strengthening effect and high ductility from the retained strain-hardening capability.

Influence of the nitrogen content on the structure and properties of MoNbTaVW high entropy alloy thin films

Ao Xia et al.

Summary: The influence of nitrogen incorporation on the chemical composition, structure, mechanical, and electrical properties of refractory (MoNbTaVW)(1-x)N-x high entropy alloy thin films is investigated in this study. The structural change from body centered cubic to face centered cubic with increasing nitrogen content resulted in increased hardness but also material embrittlement. The films were synthesized by two different physical vapor deposition methods onto silicon and polyimide substrates.

Quantitative strengthening evaluation of powder metallurgy Ti-Zr binary alloys with high strength and ductility

Katsuyoshi Kondoh et al.

Summary: In this study, extruded Ti-Zr alloys were prepared by alloying titanium with zirconium to improve its mechanical properties. The synthesized alloys exhibited excellent tensile elongation at room temperature and smaller grain size compared to pure titanium. Grain refinement and solid-solution strengthening were found to have an equal effect on increasing the yield stress of the alloys.

Modifications of partial-dislocation-induced defects and strength/ductility enhancement in metastable high entropy alloys through nitrogen doping

Byung Ju Lee et al.

Summary: Nitrogen doping can modify the role of partial-dislocation-induced defects (PDIDs) and phase stability in high entropy alloys, resulting in simultaneous improvement in strength and ductility. The formation of closely spaced extended stacking faults (ESFs) plays a crucial role in enhancing deformation homogeneity and ductility in these alloys.

Summary: This study designs a Ti48.9Zr32.0Nb12.6Ta6.5 MEA exhibiting {112}<111>(beta) twins at room temperature. The solution-treated (ST) samples show homogeneous chemical composition, good tensile properties, and no athermal phase. Microscopy reveals the interaction between twins and dislocations in the deformation of MEAs, contributing to work hardening.

Nitrogen-induced hardening of refractory high entropy alloys containing laminar ordered phases

Joshua A. Smeltzer et al.

Summary: This study explores intentionally doping high entropy alloys with non-metallic species to precipitate ordered phases and enhance hardness. The successful doping of nitrogen resulted in multiple nitrogen-rich secondary phases, including a unique ordered laminar phase and a complex carbonitride. Long term aging treatments and comparison with undoped alloys confirmed that intentional formation of complex nitride phases greatly increased the hardness by up to 3-4 GPa.

Strain hardening recovery mediated by coherent precipitates in lightweight steel

Sung-Dae Kim et al.

Summary: The study found that κ-carbide precipitates have a significant impact on the strength and ductility of aged Fe-Mn-Al-C alloys, leading to the recovery of strain hardening rate. The activation of slip systems and the planar dislocation glide are key factors in inducing strain hardening recovery in polycrystalline metals.
