Human alteration of global surface water storage variability

Sarah W. Cooley et al.

Summary: Research indicates that 57% of seasonal surface water storage variability globally occurs in human-managed reservoirs, with natural water bodies showing smaller variations. Natural variability is highest in tropical basins, while human-managed variability is greatest in the Middle East, southern Africa, and the western USA.

Towards a global Reservoir Assessment Tool for predicting hydrologic impacts and operating patterns of existing and planned reservoirs

Nishan Kumar Biswas et al.

Summary: This study developed a global reservoir monitoring framework that utilizes satellite observations and information technology to enable near real-time monitoring and impact analysis of reservoirs. The framework used a mass balance approach to monitor 1598 reservoirs in South America, Africa, and Southeast Asia, capturing reservoir state realistically for more than 75% of these reservoirs.

LAGOS-US LOCUS v1.0: Data module of location, identifiers, and physical characteristics of lakes and their watersheds in the conterminous U.S.

Kendra Spence Cheruvelil et al.

Summary: This study addresses the need for macro-scale studies of aquatic ecosystems to tackle broad-scale problems related to global change, specifically in informing national-scale environmental policies. The data paper introduces the LAGOS-US LOCUS v1.0 data module, which provides detailed information on lakes and reservoirs in the conterminous U.S. The open data platform allows for the study of these water bodies at multiple scales of space and time.
