The scale and drivers of carbon footprints in households, cities and regions across India

Summary: The carbon footprint has become an important measure for understanding the contributions of countries, sectors, and individuals to climate change. By linking household consumer surveys with global supply chain databases, spatially-explicit carbon footprint assessments can be conducted at a district and household scale. Significant disparities in carbon footprints among Indian households highlight the need to differentiate individual responsibilities for climate change in national and global climate policies.

Summary: This study quantified the reduction in household carbon footprints for 25 factors associated with individual lifestyle choices or socioeconomic characteristics, and found that factors such as living in a mild climate region, residing in a house that meets the most recent energy standards, and owning and using durable goods have the potential to reduce household CO2 emissions.

Summary: Since the 2008 financial crisis, China has been undergoing an economic transition prioritizing green economic and sustainable development over rapid growth driven by large-scale investment. The case study of the Jing-Jin-Ji urban agglomeration from 2012 to 2015 showed a decrease in carbon emissions, but the economic transition did not change the uneven pattern of selected urban agglomeration.
