Is the metal involved or not? A computational study of Cu(I)-catalyzed [4+1] annulation of vinyl indole and carbene precursor

Xiaoqian He et al.

Summary: In this study, the mechanism and regioselectivity of the Cu(I)-catalyzed [4 + 1] annulation of vinyl indoles and a carbene precursor were investigated using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The results showed that direct 1,5-annulation was favored over the Cu-assisted annulation pathway, and the regioselectivity for 1,5-annulation was attributed to the greater stability of the generated five-membered-ring product compared to the three-membered-ring product from 1,3-annulation, which was kinetically favored.

Summary: This study presents a new method for the selective amination of o-carboranes with NH3 gas via Ir catalysis, providing a convenient and efficient access to a series of 3-NH2-o-carborane derivatives. The use of NH3 gas as the amination reagent with H2 as the sole byproduct makes the protocol economical, practical, and environmentally friendly.

Tri-insertion with dearomatization of terminal arylalkynes using a carborane based frustrated Lewis pair template

Jian Zhang et al.

Summary: This work reports a new carborane-based Frustrated Lewis Pair which reacts with p-tolylacetylene at room temperature to form addition products in high yields. Further reactions with substituted phenylacetylene at higher temperatures yield unprecedented stereoselective tricyclic compounds with dearomatized aryl rings and multiple stereocenters. The phosphine unit acts as a catalyst in these reactions, with a proposed mechanism involving sequential alkyne insertion and boryl migration.
