A Novel Species of Penicillium With Inhibitory Effects Against Pyricularia oryzae and Fungal Pathogens Inducing Citrus Diseases

Li-Juan Liang et al.

Summary: A novel species of Penicillium, named P. linzhiense, was isolated from soil in Linzhi County, Tibet Autonomous Region, China. DNA sequence analyses indicated it as a new species most closely related to P. janczewskii. The new taxon showed antifungal activity against rice blast pathogen, but not against certain other pathogens, suggesting its potential as a biocontrol agent for economically important phytopathogens.

Integrative approaches for species delimitation in Ascomycota

Sajeewa S. N. Maharachchikumbura et al.

Summary: Disturbances caused by human activities result in biodiversity loss and call for more effective ways to discover and delimit species. The paper reviews the main approaches used to delimit species in the phylum Ascomycota, highlighting the advantages and disadvantages of each species concept. The advancement in phylogenetic methods has increased the rate of species discovery, but challenges such as gene tree heterogeneity still hinder species delimitation in low-rank phylogenies.

Polyphasic Approach Utilized for the Identification of Two New Toxigenic Members of Penicillium Section Exilicaulis, P. krskae and P. silybi spp. nov.

Roman Labuda et al.

Summary: Two new Penicillium species, Penicillium krskae and Penicillium silybi, were isolated from Austria and USA. Both species are well-supported by phenotypic, physiological, chemotaxonomic, and multilocus phylogenetic characteristics, belonging to section Exilicaulis in series Restricta and showing affinity to P. restrictum sensu stricto. They produce a range of toxic anthraquinoid pigments and other bioactive extrolites.

A re-evaluation of Penicillium section Canescentia, including the description of five new species

C. M. Visagie et al.

Summary: This study focused on the Penicillium section Canescentia in the fynbos biome of South Africa, identifying five new species and suggesting that previously assigned synonyms of P. canescens and P. janczewskii should be considered as distinct species. The research also updated the accepted species list and synonymies of section Canescentia species and provided a review of extrolites produced by these species.
