Angle, Spin, and Depth Resolved Photoelectron Spectroscopy on Quantum Materials

Phil D. C. King et al.

Summary: X-ray based electron spectroscopies, particularly angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy, play a crucial role in determining the chemical, electronic, and magnetic properties of solids by directly measuring the electronic band structure. The technique provides powerful insights into electronic interactions within materials, as well as the control of spin, charge, and orbital degrees of freedom, which are essential in future solid state science. Recent research focus on lower-dimensional materials and modified electronic behavior at surfaces and interfaces has made angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy a core technique in studying quantum materials.

Coincidence Detection of EELS and EDX Spectral Events in the Electron Microscope

Daen Jannis et al.

Summary: Recent advances in detector technology have enabled the detection of single events with nanosecond resolution, allowing for time correlations between electrons and X-rays in the transmission electron microscope. The novel setup described in this work improves sensitivity for trace element detection and allows for determination of collection efficiencies without the need for a reference sample. Limitations in time resolution due to the specificities of the silicon drift detector are discussed, along with ways to improve this aspect further.

Suppression of the vacuum space-charge effect in fs-photoemission by a retarding electrostatic front lens

G. Schoenhense et al.

Summary: This method presents an effective approach to suppress space-charge artifacts in time-resolved photoemission experiments, demonstrating the retention of momentum images of fast photoelectrons by repelling slow electrons using a retarding electrostatic field generated by a special objective lens. The approach enables switching between accelerating and retarding modes, allowing for a substantial increase in slow-electron yield and the exploration of previously inaccessible pump fluences in photoemission experiments. Results show minimal impact on the Fermi edge width at high energies, showcasing the potential of this method for advanced research in the field.

Subpicosecond metamagnetic phase transition in FeRh driven by non-equilibrium electron dynamics

Federico Pressacco et al.

Summary: By combining photoelectron spectroscopy and ab-initio calculations, the authors demonstrate the existence of a transient intermediate phase in FeRh, explaining the delayed appearance of the ferromagnetic phase. The transient process governing the photoinduced generation of ferromagnetic order is elucidated, indicating a photoinduced Rh-to-Fe charge transfer initiates the phase transition approximately 350 +/- 30 fs after laser excitation.

Band structure tuning of Hensler compounds: Spin- and momentum-resolved electronic structure analysis of compounds with different band filling

S. Chernov et al.

Summary: In this study, experimental observations were made on the dispersion of electronic bands with spin resolution in three representative Heusler compounds. The link between exchange splitting, band filling, and the number of valence electrons Nv was established. Furthermore, it was found that minority band gaps in Co2MnSi and Co2Fe0.4Mn0.6Si decrease with increasing Nv, contrary to rigid-band expectations.

Ultrafast electronic linewidth broadening in the C 1s core level of graphene

Davide Curcio et al.

Summary: The presence of a transiently excited hot electron gas in graphene results in a substantial broadening of the C 1s line, which is caused by an exchange of energy and momentum between the photoemitted core electron and the hot electron gas. Quantitative line-shape analysis yields the electronic temperature values consistent with those obtained from valence band data.
