Open Government Data: Usage trends and metadata quality

Alfonso Quarati

Summary: Open Government Data (OGD) have the potential to support social and economic progress, but this potential may not be realized if these data remain unused. Through analysis of 400,000 data sets from 28 national, municipal, and international OGD portals, it was found that most OGD data sets are underutilized and there is variation in the attention given to metadata quality by OGD portals. However, there is no clear evidence of a positive correlation between data set usage and better metadata publishing practices.

Do researchers use open research data? Exploring the relationships between usage trends and metadata quality across scientific disciplines from the Figshare case

Alfonso Quarati et al.

Summary: Open research data (ORD) are important for scientific transparency, but they often suffer from low usage due to data friction. This study analyzed ORD published on the Figshare repository and found that most ORD are underutilized regardless of their metadata quality.

Documenting Context-Based Quality Assessment of Controlled Vocabularies

Riccardo Albertoni et al.

Summary: The paper discusses evaluating and documenting the quality of controlled vocabularies to promote comparison and enhance semantic interoperability. Using the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP), overall quality and ranks of controlled vocabularies can be assessed by integrating different quality dimensions based on decision maker's needs. Selecting a set of e-Government controlled vocabularies as a testbed and providing updated quality values as Linked Data can facilitate interoperability while multi-step guidelines for W3C recommendations can ensure machine-readable quality metadata, promoting reliability and re-usability.

The SARAL/AltiKa mission: A step forward to the future of altimetry

Jacques Verron et al.

Summary: The CNES/ISRO altimetric satellite SARAL/AltiKa, launched in February 2013, has provided valuable data for various scientific and operational applications. Despite the drift in the satellite’s orbit since July 2016, the specific contributions and innovations related to the use of the Ka-band have become increasingly prominent. The advantages of the Ka-band include reduced ionosphere effects and better resolution, but there are drawbacks such as attenuation during rain. This study aims to highlight the advancements of the Ka-band and its potential for future missions.

A commentary review on the use of normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) in the era of popular remote sensing

Sha Huang et al.

Summary: The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) is a popular index for vegetation assessment due to its simplicity and ability to be calculated with any multispectral sensor. However, considerations such as atmospheric effects, saturation phenomena, and sensor factors must be taken into account to ensure effective use of NDVI in various applications, particularly in the UAV user community.

Geospatial Open Data Usage and Metadata Quality

Alfonso Quarati et al.

Summary: This research aims to provide an overview of the usage of Open Government Data portals, measured in terms of datasets views and downloads, and assess the possible influence of metadata quality on the use of geospatial datasets. The results show a significant underutilization of geospatial datasets and a generally poor quality of their metadata, with a weak correlation between use and metadata quality.

Modeling of the Urban Heat Island on local climatic zones of a city using Sentinel 3 images: Urban determining factors

David Hidalgo Garcia et al.

Summary: The study found that there is a urban cooling island during the morning and an Urban Heat Island at night in the city of Granada. Different urban factors have varying influences on these phenomena, with vegetation cover and solar radiation being identified as two significant factors impacting the UHI.

Assessing the Connectivity of Riparian Forests across a Gradient of Human Disturbance: The Potential of Copernicus Riparian Zones in Two Hydroregions

Andre Fonseca et al.

Summary: The study found reduced forest connectivity in riparian forests located in the Mediterranean and Central Baltic hydroregions, except for Least Disturbed sites in the Central Baltic hydroregion. The ARZ layer exhibited overall suitability to assess connectivity in the Central Baltic hydroregion, while the Mediterranean hydroregion consistently displayed overestimation of connectivity at all levels of human disturbance. Improvements in spatial resolution and thematic accuracy of the Copernicus ARZ layer are recommended to address this issue.
