A Cost-Effective Semi-Ab Initio Approach to Model Relaxation in Rare-Earth Single-Molecule Magnets

Elena Garlatti et al.

Summary: The cost-effective approach combines ab initio calculations of crystal field parameters and magneto-elastic coupling with fitting of only three microscopic parameters. By applying it to high-anisotropy compounds with very different relaxation behavior, the method demonstrates its power and identifies key ingredients for improving the performance of single-molecule magnets.

Tunable magnetic anisotropy in luminescent cyanido-bridged {Dy2Pt3} molecules incorporating heteroligand PtIV linkers

Agnieszka Puzan et al.

Summary: The interest in the generation of photoluminescence in lanthanide(III) single-molecule magnets (SMMs) is driven by valuable magneto-optical correlations as well as perspectives toward magnetic switching of emission and opto-magnetic devices linking SMMs with optical thermometry. These effects were analysed using ac magnetic data and the results of the ab initio calculations with the support of magneto-optical correlations based on low-temperature high-resolution emission spectra.

Summary: Metal-organic frameworks with stimuli-responsive magneto-optical properties have attracted significant attention for potential applications. By incorporating a thermo-responsive dianthracene component, special compounds with unique structures and properties were successfully synthesized. These compounds exhibit high affinity towards adsorption of water and ammonia, and undergo distinctive thermo-induced phase transitions.

SHG-active NIR-emissive molecular nanomagnets generated in layered neodymium(III)-octacyanidometallate(IV) frameworks

Robert Jankowski et al.

Summary: Lanthanide(III) single-molecule magnets exhibit unique magnetic and photoluminescent properties, with the ability to generate additional physical phenomena, such as non-linear optical effects. The materials crystallize in a non-centrosymmetric space group, demonstrating second harmonic generation activity and showing UV-to-visible light-induced near-infrared luminescence and slow relaxation of magnetization. The observed magnetic and optical properties are sensitive to the nature of the d-transition metal center, with improvements seen upon the replacement of Mo-IV with W-IV centers.
