Association of perinatal risk factors with neurological outcome in neonates with hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy

S. Scheidegger et al.

Summary: The study found that perinatal risk factors do not directly affect the severity of encephalopathy in neonates during the first four days of life, but fetal distress during labor and neonatal head circumference above the 10th percentile can impact neurological outcomes. When multiple risk factors are present in neonates, the probability of neurological benefit is lower.

Later cooling within 6 h and temperatures outside 33-34 °C are not associated with dysfunctional autoregulation during hypothermia for neonatal encephalopathy

Maureen M. Gilmore et al.

Summary: The study found that the cooling time to reach target hypothermia temperature within 6 hours of birth did not affect cerebral autoregulation in neonates with HIE. Temperature fluctuations above 33-34 degrees C were associated with blood pressures exceeding optimal autoregulatory vasoreactivity. Additionally, cooling time within 6 hours of birth and temperatures above 33-34 degrees C were not associated with qualitative brain injury on MRI.
