Genetic mechanisms of critical illness in COVID-19

Erola Pairo-Castineira et al.

Summary: In critically ill patients with COVID-19, host genetic variants associated with antiviral defense mechanisms and inflammatory organ damage were identified through a genome-wide association study. These genetic signals provide potential targets for therapeutic development and repurposing of existing drugs. Large-scale randomized clinical trials will be essential to confirm the effectiveness of targeted treatment strategies.

Soluble HLA-G is upregulated in serum of patients with severe COVID-19

Noor T. Al-Bayatee et al.

Summary: sHLA-G levels were significantly elevated in COVID-19 patients and associated with an increased risk of developing the disease. sHLA-G showed to be a good predictor of COVID-19 and had high sensitivity and specificity at a specific cut-off value.

Epidemiology of HPV Related Malignancies

Nicholas Scott-Wittenborn et al.

Summary: HPV infection and its associated cancers have a serious global impact, with cervical HPV infection mainly found in low-middle income countries in South America, Africa, and Asia, while HPV-positive oropharyngeal cancer is increasingly prevalent in high-income countries. The development and implementation of vaccines are crucial for the prevention of HPV infection, and the World Health Organization has designated the eradication of HPV and its associated cancers as a priority.

TRIMming Type I Interferon-Mediated Innate Immune Response in Antiviral and Antitumor Defense

Ling Wang et al.

Summary: The TRIM family comprises at least 80 members in humans, with most having ubiquitin or SUMO E3 ligase activity conferred by their N-terminal RING domain. TRIMs play important roles in regulating a wide range of biological processes such as viral infections, autophagy, cell cycle, etc., with their E3 ligase activities being attractive targets for developing specific immunotherapeutic strategies.

Epstein-Barr Virus-Associated Malignancies and Immune Escape: The Role of the Tumor Microenvironment and Tumor Cell Evasion Strategies

Marcus Bauer et al.

Summary: Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), also known as human herpes virus 4, is a pathogenic virus linked to 1-2% of cancers worldwide. It interferes with the immune system and tumor microenvironment through various mechanisms. Understanding these mechanisms can help improve therapies for EBV-related diseases.

New markers for predictions of acute and chronic rejection and graft outcomes in kidney transplant recipients; HLA-G gene 3′UTR 14 bp polymorphism and sHLA-G

Sule Darbas et al.

Summary: This study indicates that low serum sHLA-G levels are associated with an increased risk of acute and chronic rejection in kidney transplant recipients. Patients with the HLA-G 14 bp del/del genotype have higher sHLA-G levels post-transplantation and a lower frequency of acute rejection. HLA-G 3 ' UTR polymorphism and sHLA-G level may be useful in predicting rejection in kidney transplant recipients.

Increased sHLA-G Is Associated with Improved COVID-19 Outcome and Reduced Neutrophil Adhesion

Daria Bortolotti et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the levels of blood sHLA-E and sHLA-G in hospitalized COVID-19 patients with respiratory failure, finding a significant association between clinical improvement and increased sHLA-G plasma levels. It suggests a potential role for sHLA-G in improving COVID-19 patients' clinical condition related to the control of neutrophil adhesion to activated endothelium.

Acute Infection of Viral Pathogens and Their Innate Immune Escape

Kul Raj Rai et al.

Summary: Viral infections can cause widespread diseases in humans, requiring robust immune responses to prevent potentially fatal acute viral infections. While innate immunity plays a crucial role in viral clearance, it can also contribute to disease progression through immune-mediated host tissue injury.

Summary: HCMV persistently infects a high percentage of the population by evading host defenses through multiple immune-modulatory strategies. These evasion mechanisms can lead to complications such as immunosenescence and malignancy, highlighting the importance of studying HCMV-induced immune escape for developing novel therapeutic approaches.
