The Impact of Socioeconomic Status on the Clinical Outcomes of COVID-19; a Retrospective Cohort Study

Summary: Limited data have assessed the influence of disadvantaged socioeconomic status (SES) on COVID-19 patients in diverse communities in the United States. This study found that COVID-19 positive patients living in high poverty areas were younger, had a higher prevalence of comorbidities, and were more likely to be female or racial minorities compared to those in low poverty areas. Interestingly, living in a high poverty area was not associated with an increased risk of COVID-19 hospitalization and was actually linked to a decreased risk of in-hospital mortality. Further research is needed to fully understand the intersection of SES with the COVID-19 pandemic.
