Autopsy Findings in 32 Patients with COVID-19: A Single-Institution Experience

Sarah S. Elsoukkary et al.

Summary: This study reported the clinicopathologic findings from 32 autopsy studies conducted on patients who died of COVID-19, which revealed various pathological manifestations including pulmonary lesions, microthrombi, and liver injury. Most patients presented with symptoms like shortness of breath, cough, and low-grade fever, with comorbidities being common.

Effect of Recombinant Human Granulocyte Colony-Stimulating Factor for Patients With Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) and Lymphopenia A Randomized Clinical Trial

Lin-ling Cheng et al.

Summary: In a randomized clinical trial, treatment with rhG-CSF for COVID-19 patients with lymphopenia but no comorbidities did not accelerate clinical improvement, but may have reduced the number of patients developing critical illness or dying. Larger studies on a broader range of COVID-19 patients are needed.

Astrocytes are HIV reservoirs in the brain: A cell type with poor HIV infectivity and replication but efficient cell-to-cell viral transfer

Silvana Valdebenito et al.

Summary: The study found that astrocytes have infectivity in vivo and in vitro, and are able to maintain, become latently infected, reactivate and transfer HIV infection to neighboring cells. In both in vitro experiments and HIV-infected human primary astrocyte cultures, it was observed that only a small percentage of astrocytes had integrated HIV-DNA, and their replication ability was poor to undetectable. The research ultimately provides new insights into the role of astrocytes as viral reservoirs in the central nervous system (CNS).

Tunneling nanotubes, TNT, communicate glioblastoma with surrounding non-tumor astrocytes to adapt them to hypoxic and metabolic tumor conditions

Silvana Valdebenito et al.

Summary: Tunneling nanotubes (TNT) are induced between glioblastoma (GBM) cells and surrounding non-tumor astrocytes to transfer tumor-derived mitochondria, resulting in the adaptation of non-tumor astrocytes to tumor-like metabolism and hypoxia conditions.
