Accuracy of a Novel Urine Test, Fujifilm SILVAMP Tuberculosis Lipoarabinomannan, for the Diagnosis of Pulmonary Tuberculosis in Children

Mark P. Nicol et al.

Summary: A study comparing the accuracy of FujiLAM and AlereLAM in children suspected of tuberculosis in Cape Town, South Africa, showed similar sensitivity between the two tests, but lower than that of Xpert MTB/RIF in sputum. FujiLAM demonstrated higher specificity than AlereLAM, especially in children living with HIV and malnourished children, suggesting its utility as a rule-in test for children with a high pretest probability of TB.

Lipoarabinomannan Antigen Assay (TB-LAM) for Diagnosing Pulmonary Tuberculosis in Children with Severe Acute Malnutrition in Mozambique

Dulce-Vasco Osorio et al.

Summary: A study conducted in a rural health center in Mozambique found that over a third of severely malnourished children were diagnosed with pulmonary TB. The urine TB-LAM test showed a strong correlation with clinical diagnosis, suggesting its potential as a reliable diagnostic tool for childhood TB in malnourished populations.

Summary: In this study, the urine-based lipoarabinomannan assays FujiLAM showed higher sensitivity compared to AlereLAM, while AlereLAM demonstrated slightly higher specificity. This method has the potential to aid in the rapid diagnosis of childhood tuberculosis.

HIV-associated tuberculosis

Yohhei Hamada et al.

Summary: TB remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality among people living with HIV, especially in African countries. New diagnostics such as Xpert Ultra and shorter regimens with rifapentine can greatly improve diagnosis and treatment efficiency for TB in people living with HIV.

The impact of COVID-19 on TB: a review of the data

C. F. McQuaid et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has led to disruptions in TB health services, increased vulnerability to TB, limited evidence on changes in Mycobacterium tuberculosis transmission, and uncertainty about changes in resources needed for the TB response.Improving the available TB data is crucial for advocating for additional funding and efficiently allocating resources for the TB response.

The COVID-19 crisis will exacerbate maternal and child undernutrition and child mortality in low- and middle-income countries

Saskia Osendarp et al.

Summary: The impact of the COVID-19 crisis on maternal and child nutrition outcomes in low- and middle-income countries is projected under different scenarios, with a focus on mitigating excess child stunting and mortality through nutrition interventions. The disruptions caused by the pandemic could lead to an increase in wasted and stunted children, along with additional child deaths and maternal anaemia cases. Governments and donors will need to invest additional resources to scale up nutrition interventions and address the potential long-term productivity losses.
