Removal of disinfection by-product precursors by Al-based coagulants: A comparative study on coagulation performance

Pin Wang et al.

Summary: This study compared the performance of aluminum sulfate, polyaluminum chloride, and a novel type of covalently bond hybrid coagulant in controlling regulated and unregulated DBPs and their associated toxicity. The results showed that the polyaluminum chloride achieved the most reduction in both DBP concentration and DBP-associated toxicity.

Terrestrial dissolved organic matter source affects disinfection by-product formation during water treatment and subsequent toxicity

Hannah M. Franklin et al.

Summary: Restoring riparian zones with woody vegetation can help protect waterways from sediment and nutrient pollution, but leaf litter can lead to dissolved organic matter leaching into surface waters, generating disinfection by-products (DBPs) during water treatment. The study compared the DBPs formed from leachate of two native Australian riparian trees, finding that Eucalyptus tereticornis leachates produced more DBPs and induced greater toxicity in bioassays compared to Casuarina cunninghamiana and reservoir water. Different tree species have unique DBP profiles, with E. tereticornis posing a greater risk to drinking water quality.

Characterization of Dissolved Organic Matter and Its Derived Disinfection Byproduct Formation along the Yangtze River

Chao Fang et al.

Summary: The Yangtze River basin covers a significant portion of China's land area and serves as an important water source for a large population. Variation in dissolved organic matter (DOM) properties along the Yangtze River significantly impacts water treatment and disinfection byproduct (DBP) formation after chlorination. The study reveals different DOM characteristics in the Yangtze River waters, highlighting their influence on DBP formation.

Characteristics of trihalomethane and haloacetic acid precursors in filter backwash and sedimentation sludge waters during drinking water treatment

Yue Hu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the precursors of THMs and HAAs in filter backwash water and sedimentation sludge water, revealing that hydrophilic organic matter was the main precursor of THMs and HAAs, while hydrophobic organic matter also played an important role in the formation of HAAs. Corresponding treatment strategies should be considered to avoid the formation of THMs and HAAs.
