Early twenty-first century satellite-driven irrigation performance in the world's largest system: Pakistan's Indus Basin irrigated system

Jorge L. Pena-Arancibia et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the year-to-year inter-seasonal irrigation performance in 46 canal commands in the Indus Basin irrigated system using satellite-driven actual evapotranspiration estimates. Results show that canal commands with access to groundwater exhibit more equity and less inter-seasonal variability compared to those reliant on surface water supplies. Additionally, canal commands mostly show slightly increasing ETa and low inter-seasonal variability in both irrigation seasons, except for two canal commands at the system-end which exhibit higher variability and inequity.

A novel surface water index using local background information for long term and large-scale Landsat images

Linrong Li et al.

Summary: This study focuses on improving the accuracy of water extraction using remote sensing images by introducing contrast difference water index (CDWI) and shadow difference water index (SDWI) in comparison to the modified normalized difference water index (MNDWI). By combining the advantages of CDWI and SDWI, a background difference water index (BDWI) is proposed to extract surface water under complex backgrounds. The results show that BDWI outperforms other methods in accuracy and stability, especially in areas with varying backgrounds such as urban and non-urban regions.

Summary: Using concepts from the statistical physics of learning, the study focused on layered neural networks with rectified linear units (ReLU) and compared their training behavior with networks using sigmoid activations. The results revealed qualitative differences in the training behavior between ReLU and sigmoid networks. While sigmoid networks exhibited discontinuous transitions with specialized configurations coexisting and competing, ReLU networks showed continuous transitions for all hidden unit numbers. The findings were confirmed through Monte Carlo simulations of the training processes.

Satellite InSAR survey of structurally-controlled land subsidence due to groundwater exploitation in the Aguascalientes Valley, Mexico

Francesca Cigna et al.

Summary: In response to the increasing water demands in expanding cities, many aquifers in Mexico, particularly in the Aguascalientes Valley, are being overexploited and deplete, resulting in land subsidence, ground faulting, and damage to infrastructure. This study, utilizing the longest SAR survey conducted in the Aguascalientes Valley, analyzed the structurally-controlled subsidence process and associated risks. The research revealed a pattern of subsidence linked to alluvial/fluvial deposits, with maximum settlement rates increasing over time. The study also identified previously unknown deformation patterns and zones of strain, providing valuable insights for subsidence risk assessment and urban planning in the region.
