Correlation between precipitates evolution and mechanical properties of Al-Sc-Zr alloy with Er additions

Li Liu et al.

Summary: The study investigates the correlation between precipitates evolution and mechanical properties of Al-Sc-Zr alloy with Er additions during isothermal ageing. Results show that Er additions significantly improve hardness by increasing the nucleation rate of Al-3(Er,Sc,Zr) precipitates, leading to a higher density of fine nanoparticles. First-principles calculations demonstrate energetically favored solute-solute interactions, rationalizing the observed precipitate structure and formation mechanism.

Evolution of microstructure and mechanical properties influenced by nanosized precipitates during rolling deformation

Wei Qian et al.

Summary: Through severe plastic deformation of 6111Al-Er alloy, significant enhancement in performance can be achieved, including increased yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, and elongation. This is mainly attributed to the synergistic strengthening effect induced by fine grain strengthening and Orowan strengthening mechanisms. By systematically calculating the competitive relationship between driving force and restraining force, the mechanism of this synergistic strengthening effect is revealed.

Hot compression and industrial extrusion characteristics of an as-cast Al-10Sr master alloy

Zhen Zhang et al.

Summary: The addition of Al-Sr master alloy can significantly improve the mechanical properties and castability of Al-Si-based alloys by modifying the structure of eutectic silicon. The size of Al4Sr phases plays a key role in Sr-modification. Optimized processing parameters and refinement mechanisms for Al4Sr phases during plastic deformation were studied through hot compression and industrial extrusion of an as-cast Al-10Sr master alloy. The flow behavior and deformation activation energy of the alloy were characterized, and the refining effects of Al4Sr phases were demonstrated under different processing conditions. Overall, the study provides insights into the mechanisms of Al4Sr phase refinement during plastic forming processes.

The effect of grain refinement and precipitation strengthening induced by Sc or Er alloying on the mechanical properties of cast Al-Li-Cu-Mg alloys at elevated temperatures

Xuejian Zhang et al.

Summary: The addition of Scandium and Erbium to Al-Li-Cu-Mg alloy affects the microstructure evolution and mechanical performance at elevated temperatures, with Scandium showing a more significant refining effect on grain size compared to Erbium. Both rare elements facilitate the precipitation density of composite particles in the aged alloys, with Scandium also promoting the precipitation of plate-like S/S' phase during aging. The improvement of elevated-temperatures mechanical properties in Erbium-containing alloy is mainly attributed to larger grain size and precipitation of composite particles.
