A Quantum-Mechanical Study of Antiphase Boundaries in Ferromagnetic B2-Phase Fe2CoAl Alloy

Martin Friak et al.

Summary: In this study, the quantum mechanical examination of thermodynamic, structural, elastic, and magnetic properties of Fe2CoAl alloy with a chemically disordered B2-type lattice was conducted. The presence of antiphase boundaries (APBs) in the model increased the total magnetic moment and altered the coordination of Fe atoms, leading to an enhancement in the auxetic properties of the alloy.

Advanced intermetallic iron aluminide coatings for high temperature applications

Seetharama C. Deevi

Summary: This review discusses the unique ability of spray coatings of intermetallic iron aluminides to overcome the limitations of traditional engineering materials, comparing their high temperature oxidation and corrosion resistant properties with high temperature steels. The status of Fe3Al and FeAl coatings obtained by various spray techniques is presented, along with discussions on spray parameters, microstructure, and properties of the coatings. Additionally, the paper explores the application of spray techniques in achieving cost effective manufacturing by applying a layer of material as a coating instead of replacing the product obtained after melting, casting, and processing into desired shape.

The Effect of Hydrogen on the Stress-Strain Response in Fe3Al: An ab initio Molecular-Dynamics Study

Petr Sestak et al.

Summary: The study investigated the hydrogen-induced brittleness of Fe3Al under uniaxial deformation conditions up to fracture through quantum-mechanical molecular dynamics simulations. Results showed a preference of hydrogen atoms for specific interstitial positions within the Fe3Al lattice. Hydrogen atoms in certain octahedral sites represented energy maxima, leading to structural relaxation and energy minimization when migrating to tetrahedral-like positions with fewer nearest neighbors. The presence of hydrogen atoms at fracture surfaces and their influence on lowering the maximum strain associated with fracture initiation suggest an intrinsic property of hydrogen-related fracture initiation in Fe3Al even under elastic deformation conditions.

High-temperature heat treatment of hypersonic metallization coatings from pseudoalloy Fe-Al

A. N. Grigorchik et al.

Summary: The study investigates the structural-phase state and durometric characteristics of hypersonic metallization coatings made of Fe-Al pseudoalloy in the initial state and after heat treatment. Different temperatures and holding times during heat treatment lead to the formation of strengthening intermetallic phases in the coating, resulting in an increase in microhardness. Heat treatment also causes changes in the microstructure and hardness of the coatings.

Structure and Physicomechanical Properties of the Fe3Al Intermetallic Compound Obtained by Impact Hot Compaction

O. I. Tolochyn et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of impact compaction and heat treatment conditions on the physicomechanical properties and structure of intermetallic compounds. Results show that impact hot pressing at 1050°C and 1150°C can produce nearly poreless specimens, while annealing at 1350°C improves the quality of contacts between intermetallic particles and enhances mechanical properties.
