The effect of water immersion on vection in virtual reality

Geraldine Fauville et al.

Summary: The study compared participants experiencing VR while standing on the ground or floating in water in terms of vection, visually induced motion sickness, and presence. The results showed that vection was significantly enhanced in participants in the Water condition, with larger judgments of self-displacement compared to those in the Ground condition. However, no differences were found in visually induced motion sickness or presence between conditions.

Seafarers' awareness-based domain modelling in restricted areas

Hee-Jin Lee et al.

Summary: This study introduces a new domain model for ship domain research in restricted areas. It explores the factors affecting decision making based on Endsley's theory of situation awareness, with a focus on individual and environmental factors. By interviewing 125 seafarers and examining threshold values, domain modeling was performed to reveal that ship maneuverability has a greater impact on seafarers' awareness-based domains compared to ship size and speed.

A ship domain-based model of collision risk for near-miss detection and Collision Alert Systems

Rafal Szlapczynski et al.

Summary: The paper introduces a new model of ship collision risk, which utilizes the concept of ship domain and related domain-based collision risk parameters to describe ship encounters. The model is based on five variables representing encounters, with values that can be directly computed based on positions, courses, and speeds of the vessels. The model can be applied to near-miss detection, Collision Alert Systems, and collision avoidance decision support systems.

A Big Data Analytics Method for the Evaluation of Ship - Ship Collision Risk reflecting Hydrometeorological Conditions

Mingyang Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper presents a method for evaluating ship-ship collision risk using big data analytics, which helps with navigation safety by identifying potential collision scenarios and quantifying collision risk indices. Empirical results show significant differences in collision risk among different voyages, with the majority of evasive actions triggered only when risk reaches a certain level.

Fuzzy Risk Evaluation and Collision Avoidance Control of Unmanned Surface Vessels

Yung-Yue Chen et al.

Summary: The study developed a smart collision avoidance control design integrating collision avoidance navigation and nonlinear optimal control method for unmanned surface vessels (USVs). The system uses fuzzy risk indicators to provide pre-alarms for USVs to perform dodge actions in time when obstacles appear, and a nonlinear optimal control law for precise trajectory tracking. A power allocation method is used to guide USVs to follow the desired collision avoidance trajectory, showing promising collision avoidance performance and accurate trajectory tracking ability under various environmental disturbances.
