Dual antifungal activity against Candida albicans of copper metallic nanostructures and hierarchical copper oxide marigold-like nanostructures grown in situ in the culture medium

A. Martinez et al.

Summary: The study aimed to determine the in vitro activity of copper nanoparticles and copper nanowires against Candida albicans strains, as well as assess their effects on morphology and submicron structure. Results showed that both copper nanoparticles and nanowires inhibited the growth of the tested C. albicans strains, with nanoparticles disrupting the cell wall and causing leakage of cytoplasm, and nanowires decreasing the number and size of fimbriae in the yeast cells. Furthermore, both types of copper materials formed hierarchical copper oxide nanostructures during the experiment, indicating potential as new therapeutic agents for candidiasis.
