Analysis of aerosol optical depth over Bahrain and Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia based on MERRA-2 model

Summary: This study analyzed the spatial and temporal variability of aerosol optical depth (AOD) and aerosol types in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia and Bahrain from 2008 to 2019. The study used data from NASA's MERRA-2 model and found that the AOD values were lower in Bahrain compared to the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia. The dominant wind direction was from NNW to Bahrain. The major aerosol species contributing to total AOD were mineral dust, sulfate, organic carbon, sea salt, and black carbon.

The study shows that AOD values are highest over the Arabian Peninsula and southeastern Iran to western Pakistan, while lowest values are found over countries in the northern part of the region. The study also identifies dominance of mixed type aerosols in all seasons, with desert dust playing a significant role in spring and summer.
