Towards integrated cover crop management: N, P and S release from aboveground and belowground residues

Veronika Hansen et al.

Summary: Ecological intensification is crucial for arable organic farmers to close the yield gap with conventional yields. Improving cover crop management can increase nutrient availability for main crops, with a wide variation in nutrient uptake and release among different cover crop species. Mixtures of cover crops with different nutrient uptake and release characteristics have the potential to supply a more complete suite of nutrients to subsequent crops.

On-farm assessment of cover cropping effects on soil C and N pools, enzyme activities, and microbial community structure

Hanxiao Feng et al.

Summary: Long-term cover crop implementation (>6 years) promoted carbon, nitrogen, sulfur, and phosphorus cycling that are beneficial to soil health in maize-based cropping systems. Short-term cover crop mixtures also increased enzyme activities and microbial diversity, but had limited impact on soil microbial community structure.
