Changes detected in the extent of surface mining and reclamation using multitemporal Landsat imagery: a case study of Jiu Valley, Romania

Iosif Vorovencii

Summary: The study analyzed surface mining and reclamation in the Jiu Valley mining area in Romania using satellite imagery and indices, finding an increase in surface mining area over the past 30 years, primarily converted from agricultural, forest, and pasture land. A large portion of the mined areas consisted of active mines, reclaimed grassland, and reclaimed woodland.

A prediction model for the surface residual subsidence in an abandoned goaf for sustainable development of resource-exhausted cities

Qingbiao Guo et al.

Summary: This paper developed a surface residual subsidence prediction model (SRSPM) to accurately predict residual subsidence caused by void compaction in abandoned goafs. The model was verified to provide scientific decision support for the choice of suitable land resource development models above abandoned goafs.

Microgravity Survey to Detect Voids and Loosening Zones in the Vicinity of the Mine Shaft

Slawomir Porzucek et al.

Summary: The study focused on the surface microgravity surveys conducted around mine shafts, highlighting the potential risks to both the shafts and surface infrastructure due to changes in mass distribution. The results allowed for the identification of voids and loosening zones, along with the recognition of density distribution characteristics in different types of mine shafts. Additionally, the surveys provided valuable information on density changes outside shaft linings, particularly at depths where decreasing density zones were detected and require further monitoring.

Environmental Management and Landscape Transformation on Self-Heating Coal-Waste Dumps in the Upper Silesian Coal Basin

Anna Abramowicz et al.

Summary: This study analyzed environmental changes on self-heating coal-waste dumps of different ages, finding that the diversity of plant species depends on mosaic- and microhabitats, and the pace and dynamics of succession are influenced by factors such as fire stage and substrate nature.
