Occurrence and Fate of Bisphenol A and its Congeners in Two Wastewater Treatment Plants and Receiving Surface Waters in Romania

Florentina L. Chiriac et al.

Summary: The study investigated the distribution and environmental fate of Bisphenol A, its metabolite, and other congeners in wastewater treatment plants and rivers in Romania. Results showed higher concentrations of BPA in surface water compared to effluent samples, indicating possible intrinsic contamination of the rivers. Risk assessments suggested low ecological risk and no human health risk from BPA presence in the rivers.

Sources and Metal Pollution of Sediments from a Coastal Area of the Central Western Adriatic Sea (Southern Marche Region, Italy)

Federico Spagnoli et al.

Summary: The study revealed pollution by As and Ba in the surficial sediments along the Southern Marche Region coast, as well as a general decrease in concentrations of Al, Ti, P, Co, Cr, Cu, etc. Several pollution indicators were used to assess the contamination levels and three different compositional facies were identified within the sediments.

Preliminary investigation of lower Danube pollution caused by potentially toxic metals

Ira-Adeline Simionov et al.

Summary: The current study aimed to assess the pollution status of the European river-sea system lower Danube River-Danube Delta-North West Black Sea through an integrated analysis of metal concentrations in water, sediments, and fish community. The results suggest that the Danube Delta system plays an important role in filtering pollutants, and no correlation was observed between Cd, Pb concentration in the environment and fish body.

Spatial distribution of legacy pesticides in river sediment from the Republic of Moldova

Anastasia Ivanova et al.

Summary: The historical use of organochlorine pesticides in the Republic of Moldova poses a potential risk to the aquatic environment due to their persistence, bioaccumulation, and toxicity. This study found significant concentrations of legacy OCPs such as DDTs and HCHs in river sediment, with higher levels in larger rivers compared to smaller ones, indicating long-term presence and potential risk to benthic organisms in the ecosystem. Further research is needed to assess the bioaccumulation of OCPs in the aquatic food web and their impact on ecosystems and human health in the region.
