High prevalence of overall overweight/obesity and abdominal obesity amongst adolescents: An emerging nutritional problem in rural high schools in Limpopo Province, South Africa

Summary: The study found that the prevalence of overweight/obesity among rural adolescents in South Africa was 35%, with 25% having abdominal obesity by WHR and 21% by WHtR. Factors associated with increased odds of being overweight/obese included being a girl, older adolescent, and living in a household with employed adults. Eating breakfast was associated with reduced odds of being overweight/obese.

Association of body mass index and waist circumference with high blood pressure in older adults

Summary: The study found that there is an increased prevalence of high blood pressure in older adults with higher BMI and WC. The suggestion for primary prevention of high blood pressure in older adults is to maintain a BMI <= 25 kg/m2 and WC <= 88 cm for males or 86 cm for females.

Summary: A large proportion of the population in South Africa with hypertension are undiagnosed, untreated, or inadequately treated. A cross sectional study conducted in a Logistics Company in South Africa found a 50% prevalence of undiagnosed hypertension among employees with an average age of 40 years. No significant association was observed between occupation and undiagnosed hypertension, but truck drivers, van assistants, and general workers had a higher prevalence.
