Conjugated Polyelectrolytes: Underexplored Materials for Pseudocapacitive Energy Storage

Glenn Quek et al.

Summary: Conjugated polyelectrolytes (CPEs), characterized by electronically delocalized backbones with ionic functionalities, are suitable for energy-storing pseudocapacitor devices. This perspective discusses the basis for evaluating pseudocapacitor figures of merit, the general utility and challenges of neutral conjugated polymers, and recent advances in the use of CPEs in pseudocapacitor devices.

Template-free assembly of 2D-electrolytes into nanofibres

V. S. Marangoni et al.

Summary: The synthesis of composite nanofibres using functionalised graphene structures in liquid medium as building blocks involves simultaneous scrolling and reacting 2D electrolytes, resulting in a dimensional reduction of 2D materials into one-dimensional nanostructures. The spontaneous self-assembly and cross-linking processes enable the production of nanofibres without the need for fibrillation techniques, such as wet-spinning or external templates.

A Living Biotic-Abiotic Composite that can Switch Function Between Current Generation and Electrochemical Energy Storage

Yude Su et al.

Summary: In this study, a biotic-abiotic composite consisting of self-doped conjugated polyelectrolyte and electrogenic bacteria is demonstrated to reversibly switch between electrical current generation and electrochemical energy storage by the simple addition and removal of Mg2+ in the bulk electrolyte. This switch in functionality is achieved through reversible changes in the composite's macrostructures and the number of living bacteria within it, showing the possibility of on-demand switching between current generation and charge storage with one integrated living material.
