Summary: Microalgae biomass (MB) as a renewable energy source, especially when cultivated in wastewater treatment, shows great potential but requires optimized valorization routes to be sustainable. The cradle-to-gate modeling of MB production highlighted electricity consumption as a major environmental impact factor in both scenarios, with freshwater eutrophication and terrestrial ecotoxicity being negatively affected by CO2 emissions.
