The first late cretaceous mawsoniid coelacanth (Sarcopterygii: Actinistia) from North America: Evidence of a lineage of extinct 'living fossils'

Lionel Cavin et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of the discovery of Mawsonia coelacanth fossils in Texas on the characteristics of living fossils and compares them with Latimeria. By comparing the duration of different fish genera in the fossil record, biogeographic signals, and life traits, it is proposed that Mawsonia's presence in North America may be related to the vicariant event of Pangea's breakup rather than dispersal from Gondwana. The wide geographic distribution and resilience to extinction shown by Mawsonia suggests a similar situation may have existed for Latimeria, allowing it to survive for millions of years.

An Atlas of Phanerozoic Paleogeographic Maps: The Seas Come In and the Seas Go Out

Christopher R. Scotese

Summary: Paleogeography studies the changing surface of Earth over time, affected by plate tectonics, climate, and weather. In the past 750 million years, continents have experienced latitudinal distribution changes, fluctuations in sea level, and mountain building and erosion, impacting global climate, ocean circulation, and life evolution. The maps in this review illustrate how Earth's surface has evolved through the formation and breakup of supercontinents, opening and closing of oceans, and continuous modifications by mountain building and erosion.

A new vertebrate fauna from the Lower Cretaceous Holly Creek Formation of the Trinity Group, southwest Arkansas, USA

Celina A. Suarez et al.

Summary: The vertebrate fauna from the Holly Creek Formation in Arkansas represents a late Early Cretaceous ecosystem dominated by semi-aquatic forms. It is similar to other late Early Cretaceous assemblages in North America, suggesting a low-diversity, broadly distributed continental ecosystem during this period. This contrasts sharply with the highly diverse ecosystem that emerged by the Cenomanian, highlighting the impact of vicariance driven by Sevier tectonics and climatic changes during the early Late Cretaceous.

A new ichthyodectiform fish (Actinopterygii: Teleostei) from the Arlington Member (mid-Cenomanian) of the Upper Cretaceous Woodbine Formation in Texas, USA

Summary: A new fossil fish species, Bardackichthys carteri gen. et sp. nov., from the Upper Cretaceous Woodbine Formation in Texas, USA, is described and classified within a new ichthyodectiform family. This fish is characterized by its stout body, large eyes, and likely behavior of ambushing small pelagic fishes in brackish environments.

An early bothremydid from the Arlington Archosaur Site of Texas

Brent Adrian et al.

Summary: The study describes a new side-necked turtle, Pleurochayah appalachius gen. et sp. nov., which is a basal member of the Bothremydidae. This discovery reveals the oldest evidence of dispersal of crown Pleurodira from Gondwana to Laurasia, and demonstrates unique marine adaptation and dispersal capability among basal bothremydids.
