Recent progress in single-molecule transistors: their designs, mechanisms and applications

Huanyan Fu et al.

Summary: Single-molecule field-effect transistors (FETs) are crucial for future electronic circuits and serve as a unique platform for studying physical mechanisms at the single-molecule level. Designing single-molecule FETs involves focusing on functional molecule design, gate electrode construction, and control of molecule-electrode interface coupling. These FETs not only provide a foundation for practical applications, but also contribute to the exploration of physical laws.

Evaluation of Carbon Based Molecular Junctions as Practical Photosensors

Shailendra K. Saxena et al.

Summary: Molecular junctions with partially transparent top contacts can be used as photosensors, and the device performance is determined by the molecular layer inside. By evaluating molecular junctions containing nitroazobenzene (NAB) oligomers and two different aromatic molecules in bilayers, device parameters affecting photodetection performance were determined. The use of thick molecular layers can reduce dark current and noise, improving detection limits, while lower temperature enhances detection limits due to the lower activation energy of photocurrents compared to dark currents.

Tunable Symmetry-Breaking-Induced Dual Functions in Stable and Photoswitched Single-Molecule Junctions

Na Xin et al.

Summary: This study achieved gate-controlled rectifying function and high-performance field effect in a single-molecule photoswitch. By tuning the molecular orbitals separately under gate electric fields, the symmetric orbital shifting was realized, enhancing molecular symmetry breaking and improving field-effect performance. The gate-controlled symmetry-breaking effect can be switched on/off by isomerizing the DAE unit, providing a new scheme for building high-performance multifunctional molecular nanocircuits.

Probing Interfacial Electronic Effects on Single-Molecule Adsorption Geometry and Electron Transport at Atomically Flat Surfaces

Zhou Yu et al.

Summary: By utilizing STM breaking junction and shell-isolated nanoparticle-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, researchers investigated the electron transport and adsorption geometries of 4,4'-bipyridine on Au(111). The surface modification with ionic liquids containing specific cations was found to influence the adsorption configurations of the molecules and their single-molecule conductance, with water addition resulting in significant changes. The dihedral angle between the adsorbed pyridyl ring and the surface was observed to decrease with increasing surface electronic density, enhancing electron donation from the surface to the pyridyl ring.

Single Dynamic Covalent Bond Tailored Responsive Molecular Junctions

Yong Hu et al.

Summary: In this study, responsive molecular devices with acid-base and photo-thermal responses were fabricated using a single dynamic acyl hydrazone bond. The devices exhibited three well-defined molecular conductance states, with reversible switching and distinct ON/OFF ratios. Density functional theory calculations revealed that the multiple conductance states were due to the dynamic acyl hydrazone bond exchange and C=N isomerization. This work opens up new possibilities for designing tailored single-molecule electrical devices.
